Kalamazoo, MI Died November 1, 2009 in Kalamazoo, MI after a brief illness. She was a resident of Friendship Village in Kalamazoo, for the past 12 years. Kathryn was born September 20, 1918 in Benton Harbor, the daughter of Frank and Jessie Lenherr Mollhagen. Kate graduated from Benton Harbor High School and attended Benton Harbor Business College. On June 1, 1940, she married Lloyd Chappell. Kate lived most of her life in St. Joseph, MI, enjoying golf and was an avid bridge player. She was employed in the Business Department at Lake Michigan College, retiring in 1981. Kate was very active in civic affairs, a member of First Congregational Church of Kalamazoo, Krasl Art Center, Fort Miami Heritage Society and a charter member of Civic Benefit Club. Kate is survived by her three daughters, Virginia Darcey Steinman of St. Joseph, Sandra Roger Stephenson of Portage and Renee Jeff Zylstra of Grand Rapids; six grandchildren Jessica Christopher Parise, Jeff Bonnie Steinman, Andrea Tim Culp, Ross Stephenson, Michael Julie Amon Kaiser and Amy Doug VanEeuwen; and 14 great grandchildren. Kathryn is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Don and Nina Mollhagen of Kalamazoo, two nieces and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd in 1996. A private interment will be held at Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph and a celebration of her life will be held in the KIVA at Friendship Village, 1400 N. Drake Rd, at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 7, 2009. Donations in her honor may be made to the Berrien County Cancer Service, Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan or the Salvation Army of St. Joseph/Benton Harbor.
