Julie K. Lyons passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the age of 82. She was a cherished daughter, wife, stepmother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend to many. Julie's legacy is one of unwavering dedication, an inquisitive mind, remarkable talent, and boundless love.
Born and raised in Kalamazoo, Julie graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and went on to pursue her studies at Western Michigan University. Her passion for organization and attention to detail led her to serve as an assistant to the superintendent of the Kalamazoo Public Schools for many years. Julie's professional journey later led her to the patent department at Upjohn Pharmaceuticals, which later became Pfizer. There, she served as a legal secretary until her well-deserved retirement.
Julie was a consummate professional, but it was through her musical gifts that she truly left an indelible mark on the world. From the young age of 17, Julie became the organist for North Presbyterian Church, and dedicated the next 66 years to the ministry of music. Her delicate hands danced across the keys, offering prayers through her fingertips, and touching the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to hear her play. Julie's talent was not merely skillful — she was a truly gifted and anointed pianist and organist.
In addition to her musical contributions at North Presbyterian, Julie devoted her time and energy to various activities, including spending many years performing as an alto in the Kalamazoo Bach Chorus. Julie was a crossword puzzle enthusiast, a fan of paper crafts and pop-up books, and a voracious reader.
Even with all of that, Julie's greatest joy was found in her loving relationship with her "Mr. Wonderful," Norman Lyons. Together, they exemplified the true meaning of love and devotion for nearly 54 years. Julie is also survived by her stepchildren, Julia Lyons and Matthew Lyons (Carla Hall), as well as her grandchildren, Brianna Nehm (Terry) and Noah Lyons, and her great-grandchildren, Maverick and Ryker. Julie will be deeply missed by her sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Julie Lyons touched the lives of many with her kindness, talent, and unwavering faith in the power of love. While she may no longer be with us physically, her spirit and grace will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. May her soul find eternal peace and may her memory be a lasting blessing to us all.
A memorial service to celebrate Julie's life will be held at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial and Cremation Services, 3926 S 9th Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49009, on Saturday, May 25, at 12:00 pm. The family will begin welcoming guests for visitation at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to a charity of your choice, in honor of Julie's lifelong commitment to serving others.
