John Spencer Jr., 67, went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 6, 2015 at his home in Climax, Michigan. He was born on May 19, 1948 in Moran, Michigan to John and Fawn (Kievet) Spencer.
John grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He graduated from Galesburg Augusta High School in Galesburg, Michigan in 1967. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army and was sent to combat in Vietnam in 1969 where he would rise to the rank of Sergeant and would earn numerous medals including the Bronze and Silver Stars, along with a purple heart after being wounded in combat. Upon his return to the states, John worked as a painter with his father until joining the maintenance department at Portage Public Schools in 1972. He would remain with the school system until 2005 when he retired from Portage Public Schools as the Facility Manager for the entire school district.
John married his high school sweetheart, Susan Loveland in 1969 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. They were happily married for 46 years and had three children of that union. John was a member of Valley Family Church and loved to serve God within the church as an Usher. When not serving, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren and truly loved watching as they themselves began to develop relationships with the Lord.
John was preceded in death by his father and mother, John and Fawn Spencer, his infant sister Fawn Spencer, an aunt and five uncles.
John is survived by his spouse Susan of Climax, Michigan; his children, Melissa Schley of Paw Paw, MI; John III (Monica) Spencer of Schoolcraft, MI; Chad (Jennifer) Spencer of Vicksburg, MI; his siblings Dawn Buell; Wilda (Doug) Henderson; In-laws Joyce (Chuck) Spence, Matt (Barb) Loveland, Todd (Laura) Loveland, Ed (Pat) Loveland; his grandchildren Samantha, Destiny, John, Hope, Allie, Gabe and Isaac Spencer; Caleb, Tyler, Nick and Noah Schley; Alexis and Conner Candler, Ashley Richard, and Jessica Spence; and his many nieces and nephews and other relatives.
There will be a celebration of life for John Spencer that will be held at 5658 S. 36th Street, Climax, MI 49034, at 2:00 p.m. on 12th of September, 2015.
