John passed away on September 14, 2010 at Bronson Hospital. John was born on December 1, 1936 in Holland, MI the son of John and Helene Schreur. John graduated from Holland High School in 1954 and served in The United States Navy for 3 years. On December 22, 1956 he married Patricia Ann Kole, his high school sweetheart. Following graduation from Western Michigan University in 1959 with a degree in Elementary Education, he began his 40-year career in the Portage Public Schools District, the final 25 of which he served as Principal at West Middle School. In 2005, Patricia, his beloved wife and "#1 Cheerleader" of 48 years, passed away following a courageous battle with cancer. John celebrated his 70th birthday in 2006 by marrying Martha Ann Cannon of Highland Village, TX. They celebrated every day they had together. He was a very loving father, devoted husband, member at Berean Baptist Church in Portage and Temple Baptist Church in Louisville TX. His favorite activities were socializing with family and friends, golfing, playing cards, exploring and RVing throughout the great states of Michigan and Florida, traveling, photography, reading, studying history, and avidly following his favorite sports teams. John is survived by his son, John Curtis Carol of Scottsdale AZ; his daughter, Catherine of Mt. Pleasant; his son, Christopher Valerie of Folsom CA; granddaughter Alexis of Folsom; his devoted wife Martha Ann; her son Scott Deanna of Louisville TX; her daughter Valerie Hutchinson Greg of Highland Village TX; her son Grant Michelle of Comstock; and numerous grandchildren. Also surviving are John's sisters Myra Ron of Jamestown and Lois of Holland; brothers Ivan Ruth of Vermilion OH and Alan Gwen of King of Prussia PA; Patricia's brother Howard Betty of Holland; Martha Ann's father Herbert Hayes and her brother Herbert Hayes of Houston, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Thursday, September 16 from 3-5 and Friday, September 17 from 6-8 at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. Funeral Services will be held at Berean Baptist Church, 7813 S. 12th St. at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 18 with the Pastor Richard Wallace officiating. Private interment will take place at Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Holland. Memorials may be directed to Hospice Care of SW Michigan.
