Portage, Michigan Died Friday morning, July 25, 2008. John was born February 5, 1926 in Vicksburg, Michigan a son of Valorus and Martha Walker Mattheis. During WWII, he served with the U.S. Army in CBI theatre. He had been a Kalamazoo area resident most of his life and was employed with General Motors for 24 years, retiring in 1990. He enjoyed golfing, bowling & Canadian fishing trips with his many friends. He was also a member of the Lord of Life Lutheran Church; life member of the V.F.W.; and the American Legion #207. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Mary and Dorothy; and a brother, Valorus, Jr. On October 11, 1947, John was united in marriage to Betty J. Goodwin Mattheis who survives. Also surviving are 2 children, Elgin Shirley Mattheis of Lawton and Carol Carl Coonce of Hortonville, WI; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday from the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. Interment will follow in Ft. Custer National Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8pm on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Michigan Diabetes Association or the West Michigan Cancer Center or Lord of Life Lutheran Church.
