MAREK, John P.
of Portage Passed away Tuesday morning, May 10, 2011 at the Rose Arbor Hospice Residence. John was born June 26, 1923 in Saginaw, MI the son of Stanley and Katherine Ozga Marek. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy Reserve for 28 years retiring in 1970 as Lt. Commander USNR. During his time in the service he was a Navy Pilot stationed on the carrier Natoma Bay CVE 62. John flew 36 combat missions, which included the Lingayan Gulf War, Iwo Jima, and the Philippines Sea. He also received various awards for service to his country which included the Distinguished Flying Cross, 7 Air Medals, and the Presidential Unit Citation. John also worked for many years as an engineer with Michigan Bell Telephone and several years with Charles Services, Inc. He was a charter member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and working in his garden. He especially loved spending time with his family; and attending his children and grandchildren's many various sporting and school activities. On September 27, 1947 he was united in marriage to his loving wife of 62 years, the former Clementine Brown who preceded him in death on November 13, 2009. He was also preceded in death by a son, Ken Marek. He is survived by his loving family which include his children, Susan Schau Dennis Austin, Colleen Fenner, Nancy Keith Elwood, John Sherry Marek, Patrick Bethany Marek; 5 grandchildren, Kristi Jeff Johnson, Jennifer Schau, Alison and Bradley Marek, and Scott Hoyt; 1 great-grand-daughter, Lauren Johnson; a sister, Mary Andryszczyk; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, at 10:00 o'clock, at St. Catherine of Siena, 1150 W. Centre with Fr. Chris Ankley, Celebrant. Interment will follow in Ft. Custer National Cemetery with full military honors. Friends may meet the family Sunday from 5-8pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E.
