HAWTHORNE, John T. ?Jack? Richland Passed away Friday, April 20, 2007. He was born June 30, 1932 in Indianapolis, IN, the son of William G. and Marcia Moorman Hawthorne and had been a resident of the Richland area for over 30 years. Jack began his career as a journalist, including several years with the Kalamazoo Gazette. He was a prolific writer and won the annual Law Day Award in 1966, based on a series of articles on release without recognizance, which resulted in it being instituted in Kalamazoo. He then returned to WMU, where he earned an undergraduate degree, with majors in Sociology and Political Science and a Masters Degree in Political Science. He earned a second Masters Degree in criminal justice from the State University of New York at Albany. Jack taught sociology, political science and criminal justice at the college level. He served as the court administrator in Jersey City, NJ and then at Southfield, MI. During this time, he developed a software system that modernized the court systems and is still in use in several states today. Jack served his country in the Unite States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Otsego Moose Lodge, loved bowling, golfing and spending time with his family. He was a strong family man. On September 26, 1964 he married the former Barbara Schensul, who survives. Also surviving are his children, John Jeralynne Hawthorne of San Diego, CA, Kathy Murray of Indianapolis, IN, Joe Laura Hawthorne of Richland and Jennifer Hawthorne of Boston; his grandchildren, Niki & Matt Hawthorne, Kelly Tony Quirino, Chris Murray, Cameron Sabotin, Jason Hawthorne and Jessie Hawthorne; a great granddaughter, Ruby Quirino; a sister, Carolyn John Mutz of Indianapolis, IN; a brother, Bill Hawthorne of Indianapolis, IN. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday in the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. with Rev. Fr. Donald Adams officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Borgess Cardiac Care Unit.
