Portage John Hanson died Tuesday evening, December 25, 2007 at his home. He was born July 1, 1923, in Grayling, MI a son of Ernst S. and Edna Struble Hanson and had lived in this area since 1963. John was commissioned from Columbia University?s Naval Officers Candidate School then served in the US Navy during WWII in the South Pacific, participating in the battle for Okinawa. He received his bachelors and masters degrees in forestry from the University of Michigan and spent his life as a professional forester and forestry consultant. John was a member of Portage First United Methodist Church, the Michigan Association of Consulting Foresters, the Society of American Foresters and involved with the Michigan Tree Farm Program. John was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Marion Siciliano and a brother, Morris H. Hanson. On June 19, 1948, John was united in marriage with the former Mary Long, who survives. Also surviving are: three children and their spouses, Paula Larry James of Colorado Springs, CO, Jeffrey Michelle Hanson of Portage and Christian Loretta Hanson of Vicksburg; five grandchildren, Steven, Carissa and Laura Hanson and Amelia and Stephanie James; sister-in-law, Virginia Peck of Portage; brother-in-law, Robert Long of Naples, FL; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4 & 6-8pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. A memorial service will be held 11:00 Saturday morning at Portage First United Methodist Church, 8740 S. Westnedge Ave., with Pastor John Moore, officiating. Private inurnment will be held later.
