John Glas

GLAS, Mr. John
Kalamazoo John died early Monday morning, March 21, 2011 and went home to be with his Heavenly Father. He was born March 8, 1932 in Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands, a son of Abram and Grietje Smit Glas and moved with the family to the United States when he was 17 years old. John served in the US Army from 1952 to 1954 being honorably discharged following the Korean War. John, a man of strong faith, was a member of Second Christian Reformed Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He was also a member of the Singing Crusaders and a volunteer with Appalachia Reach Out. John was a member of the Kalamazoo Internationals Soccer Club and enjoyed camping, working on his cars and going on hunting trips out West with his friends and family. John was preceded in death by: his parents; a son, Thomas A. Glas; two brothers, Nikolaas and Abram Glas; three sisters-in-law, Tresa Glas, Martha Glas and Marjorie Wolthuis, and a brother-in-law, Art Mulder. On September 23, 1960, John was united in marriage to Geziena "Sena" Wolthuis, who survives. Also surviving are: five children, Nicholas J. Cynthia Glas of Otsego, MI, Deborah S. Elton Veenstra of Ellsworth, MI, Jacob W. Glas Debbie Rutgers of Hickory Corners, MI, John A. Amy Glas of Aloha, OR and Matthew Q. Glas Stacee Sparks of Aurora, CO; sixteen grandchildren, Danielle Josh Moyer, David Christner, Andrew Dutra, Caleb, Ben, Amanda & Beth Ann Veenstra, AJ, Zachary & Maranda Glas, Violet, Beverly, Emmitt & Abner Glas and John & Megan Glas; five great-grandchildren, Calvin, Desi, Dillon, Kristina & Emily; two brothers, Jacob Carol Glas and Joe Glas; three sisters, Ann Glas, Grace Mulder and Jo Arie Gritter; two sisters-in-law, Ali Glas and Grace Wolthuis; two brothers-in-law, Jake Flo Wolthuis and Marinus Wolthuis; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. Services will be held 11:00 Friday morning at Second Christian Reformed Church, 3015 Nichols Rd, with the Rev. Dr. Warren H. Lammers, officiating. Burial in Green Bower Cemetery will follow services.
