BAKER, John F. Jr. "Grandpa John"
of Portage, Michigan Passed away January 23, 2009 at Borgess Hospital. He was born November 16, 1926 in Kalamazoo, to the late John F. and Tressa Joyce Baker, Sr. John was united in marriage on November 25, 1949 to the former Elsie Hawley, who preceded him in death in October 2000. John served in the U.S. Army during WWII, from March 1945 until honorably discharged in November of 1946. He was a longtime member of the 12th Street Baptist Church. John was a very social, people-loving man who lived life as fully as one could. He loved to take drives intending to meet others, enjoyed visiting his favorite restaurants where friends would be and loved to dance. For many years he was a member of the award-winning group, the Town Criers Quartet as he also loved to listen to quartet music. John is survived by family and his many friends who he dearly loved and who also loved him. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street, where funeral services will take place on Wednesday, 11:00 am, Pastor Randy Burnett, officiating.
