Joe Louis Ayers, born on November 18, 1939, in Hardin County, Tennessee, peacefully passed away on February 3, 2025, in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Joe's early years were spent in Tennessee, where he attended Dunbar High School. In his 20s, he embarked on a new journey, relocating to Kalamazoo. He loved telling jokes and sharing laughter with those around him. His favorite moments were spent fishing, feeding deer in his backyard, playing cards, and gathering with his extended family.
Joe is survived by his son Jamaine Pillow, and his wife Elvena "Chess" Pillow. He leaves behind his sisters Melba Martin and Mary Ollie, his brother Roy Ayers, and niece Cynthia Streeter, and nephews Billy Joe McGrath, Michael McGrath, Tony Ollie, Darryl Ollie, Quentin Martin and a host of other nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Joe is also survived by his dog Bex, who was devoted to him and constantly at his side.
He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Ayers, his mother, Berline Shotwell, his sister Elizabeth Ollie and his brother Willie Ayers.
Cremation is planned following a private family viewing.
