Joan DeBruyn Everts

EVERTS, JOAN Of Portage Joan DeBruyn Everts passed on to her heavenly home on June 10, 2012. Joan was born January 1, 1929, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Richard and Mary Klop DeBruyn. She graduated from Portage High School Class of 1947, where she was the class president and top honors student. Joan continued her education at Western Michigan University where in 1951; she received her degree in Elementary Education. For several years she taught in the Portage School System until she began raising her family. After raising her family, Joan continued substitute teaching for many years. Joan was a lifetime member of First Reformed Church of Portage. She is a former president of the Kalamazoo J-Cettes Jaycee's spouses and a longtime former member of the Kalamazoo Garden Club. Joan is survived by her husband of 61 years John Everts, and from this marriage they were blessed with four sons: John Philip Everts of Portage, Jeffrey Alan Pam Everts of Vicksburg, James Bradley Carolyn Everts of Portage and Joel Scott Renea�� Everts of Portage; six grandchildren, Scott, Chris, Emily, Peter, Ashley and Lucas Everts, a sister-in-law, Henrietta Everts and a brother-in-law, Roger Tuinstra. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Marilyn Tuinstra and by an infant sister. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 13th from 2-4 and 5-8 PM at the Langeland Family Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. Funeral Services for Joan will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, June 14th at First Reformed Church of Portage 7905 S. Westnedge Ave with Pastor Clayton Smith officiating. A private family interment will be held in Portage Central Cemetery. Memorials in Joan's memory may be directed to First Reformed Church of Portage, The Kalamazoo Garden Club or a charity of your choice.
