Went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 7, 2011. Jerry was born April 6, 1936 in Kalamazoo, a son of William and Nellie Hoogenboom Sr. and was a lifelong resident here. After graduating from Kalamazoo Central High School, he served in the U.S. Army National Guard. Jerry was employed as a mechanic at Don Seelye Ford for 8 years and as an Auto Parts Specialist for 28 years, also at Don Seelye. He was a lifelong member of Bethany Reformed Church and always attended evening services at Grace Christian Reformed Church. He also ate lunch on a daily basis at Senior Services. Jerry was a dragster race car driver until he was seriously injured in a dragster accident on August 23, 1964 and because of that injury, became a member of the Michigan Closed Head Injury Group. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and by 2 brothers, William DeBruyn, Jr. and Robert DeBruyn. Surviving are a sister-in-law Janice DeBruyn of Kalamazoo; nieces and nephews, James Sally DeBruyn of Kalamazoo, Brenda Richard Barrena of Cathedral City, CA, Janel Curtis Cunningham, June Curt Bassler and Ross DeBruyn, all of Kalamazoo; several great-nieces and nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2011 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. Private family interment will be on Monday at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am at Bethany Reformed Church, 1833 S. Burdick St. with the Rev. Dr. Robert Terwilliger officiating. Memorial contributions in Jerry's memory may be made to Bethany Reformed Church Memorial Fund or to Kalamazoo Senior Services.
