Went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 7, 2011. Jerry was born April 6, 1936 in Kalamazoo, a son of William and Nellie Hoogenboom Sr. and was a lifelong resident here. After graduating from Kalamazoo Central High School, he served in the U.S. Army National Guard. Jerry was employed as a mechanic at Don Seelye Ford for 8 years and as an Auto Parts Specialist for 28 years, also at Don Seelye. He was a lifelong member of Bethany Reformed Church and always attended evening services at Grace Christian Reformed Church. He also ate lunch on a daily basis at Senior Services. Jerry was a dragster race car driver until he was seriously injured in a dragster accident on August 23, 1964 and because of that injury, became a member of the Michigan Closed Head Injury Group. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and by 2 brothers, William DeBruyn, Jr. and Robert DeBruyn. Surviving are a sister-in-law Janice DeBruyn of Kalamazoo; nieces and nephews, James Sally DeBruyn of Kalamazoo, Brenda Richard Barrena of Cathedral City, CA, Janel Curtis Cunningham, June Curt Bassler and Ross DeBruyn, all of Kalamazoo; several great-nieces and nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2011 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. Private family interment will be on Monday at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am at Bethany Reformed Church, 1833 S. Burdick St. with the Rev. Dr. Robert Terwilliger officiating.
