He was the son of Mansel and Annie Comer and was one of seven children. Jeff was an avid sportsman playing football throughout high school, and spent much of his life fishing and golfing. A lifelong patriot, he enlisted in the U.S.A.F. in 1950 and served two tours of duty which included combat in the Korean Conflict. Upon discharge he enrolled in the Michigan Veterans Vocational School at W.M.U., earning a certificate in Communications Technology. On December 13, 1958, Jeff married Amelia Ellen Toomey, who would become his lifelong friend, partner and companion. Jeff served as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for over twenty five years and retired in 1992. He was active in the AFL-CIO and was a longtime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Moose Fraternal Organization.
