BARTELS, Mrs. Jeane I.
Of Kalamazoo, MI Jeane passed away Friday August 14, 2009 at her residence at Friendship Village. She was born August 19, 1916, in Perry, Michigan, the daughter of James and Fleda Harte Cottrell. Jeane was a resident of Kalamazoo since 1946 and was employed with The Upjohn Company for several years, then served as a librarian with the Kalamazoo Public Schools for 14 years. She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kalamazoo where she had been active with the Sunday School program and with Ministry with Community. She was also active as a Grey Lady following WWII and served as a Girl Scout Leader. On May 24, 1939, she was married to Wilmur "Bill" Bartels who preceded her in death on January 25, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Robin Bartels in 1969; two sisters, Lenore Smith and Myrtle Pegram. Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Richard Rigterink of Ann Arbor; and Nancy and Thomas Schulte of Grosse Pointe Farms; grandchildren, Deborah Joseph Guettler, Wendy Rigterink, David Tami Rigterink, Gregory Julie Schulte and Kristen Schulte; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Nicholas and Benjamin; a sister, Betty Hincher; a sister-in-law, Jean Boyink and several nieces and nephews.
We will be celebrating Jeane's life at 1:00 PM Sunday, August 16 at First Presbyterian Church of Kalamazoo 321 W. South St. with Rev. Wayne Conner officiating. Immediately following the service, family will receive friends in the church guild room for a light lunch and a time of fellowship. For those who wish to attend, a graveside service will be held 1:00 PM Monday at Grand Prairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Jeane's memory may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church of Kalamazoo.
