OBREITER, Jean E.
of Kalamazoo, Michigan Passed away Tuesday afternoon, February 5, 2013. Jean was born August 9, 1921 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Cecil and Marguerite Harvey Root and had been a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo. She attended Grand Prairie Country School and was a graduate of State High School in 1939. She was also a graduate of Parsons Business School in 1941 and was a member of the Iota Business Sorority. Jean worked as a secretary on the first draft board during World War II and later worked with Cooperative Extension work associated with Michigan State College. She served as State Treasurer of State Council; did volunteer work with the American Cancer Society; and was a member of the Kalamazoo Garden Club and the 4-H Club. On May 17, 1941 she was united in marriage to her loving husband, Donald who she worked with in Boy Scouting and developing the Westwood Little League. Don preceded her in death in 1989. She was also preceded in death by 3 sons, Richard, Robert, Larry. Surviving are 7 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn Canute; daughters-in-law, Gloria and Cindy; sisters-in-law, Joyce and Pat; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest North Cemetery. Friends may meet the family Thursday evening from 6-8 pm and from 1-2 pm prior to the service on Friday. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
