Janice Mary Miska Muehlenbeck passed away in Galesburg, Michigan on December 31, 2024. She was 83 years old. Janice was the third child of Darwin and Gwendolyn (nee Zak) Miska and was born September 24, 1941 in Saginaw, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her husband retired Coast Guard Lt. Commander Carl Jon Muehlenbeck who passed away in 2021. Janice has four children, Ann Willbanks, Carl Jon Muehlenbeck Jr., Karin Johanna Muehlenbeck, and Kirsten Lee Kunz. Surviving relatives include nine grandchildren, two brothers, and several nieces and cousins.
Janice graduated from Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw in 1959 and afterwards moved to Washington DC where she joined the typist pool at the Pentagon and enjoyed the busy city life for several years before her marriage.
She and Carl met in high school where alphabetically Carl sat behind her in homeroom and pulled her hair and passed her notes with silly drawings on them. They continued a long-distance romance through the mail while Carl was in training and she worked typing memos for Generals. Carl and Janice were married in San Diego in 1962 and lived wherever the military moved them for more than 20 years. She was a long-time member of the Officer’s Wives Club, studied art in Mobile, Alabama and in retirement travelled the world enjoying the world’s culture, art and architecture. She enjoyed, drawing, crafting, painting, and gardening. Janice was an avid reader and made good use of libraries and bookstores. She lived for a few years in Houghton Lake, but eventually settled in Galesburg in a riverside cottage and enjoyed the natural beauties of western Michigan.
