STEELE, Janet A.
of Portage, MI Passed away May 17, 2009 at Bronson Hospital. She was born June 13, 1914 in Appleton, Wisconsin to the late Julius and Clara Schleiker Schultz. She was united in marriage to Hillis Steele, who preceded her in death in 1963. Janet's great loves were her family followed by her church. She loved to travel, especially where family lived, was an avid reader and for all who knew her, were aware of her love of learning. She also was an avid bridge player, playing in many bridge groups. She volunteered her time at Bronson Hospital and State Hospital and she had a longtime passion for making devotional books for the blind, a service which she helped create in the early 1960's and lives on today. Also surviving Janet is her daughter, Susan Samuel Swinehart of Portage; grandchildren, James Sherri Swinehart and Jon Ann Swinehart; great grandchildren, Brittany, Tyler, Sydney and Kyle; and several nieces and nephews. Also preceding her in death were sisters, Dorothy Roberts, Ruth Harding and Phyllis Meyer. A visitation will be Tuesday, May 19th from 2-4 and 6-8:00pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street and 1 hour prior to services at the church, 10-11:00am. Services will take place Wednesday, May 20th at 11:00 at Zion Lutheran Church, 2122 Bronson Blvd. Committal service will be at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park, following the family gathering.
