Of Lawrence Passed away Saturday morning, March 13, 2010. Jim was born January 16, 1926 in West Frankfort, IL the son of Jesse and Ruth Taylor Smothers. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he received the Purple Heart. Prior to his retirement Jim worked for over 35 years with Checker Motors. He loved spending time with his family and tinkering around the farm. Jim also enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was an avid NASCAR fan and looked forward to spending time at the local race tracks. On February 14, 1952 he was united in marriage to his loving wife, the former Jean VanWyk, who preceded him in death on October 28 1994. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Cecil. Surviving are 3 children, Russell Georgia Smothers, Pat George Schneider, Sherie Mike Middleton; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Joyce Smothers; and a niece and nephew. Services will be held at 11:00 o'clock Wednesday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre with Rev. Jim Dyke officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest North Cemetery. Friends may meet the family Monday and Tuesday evening from 6-8pm at the Portage Chapel. Memorials may be directed to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
