Portage Jim passed away Friday April 15, 2011, at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI with is family by his side. He was born January 8, 1946, in Kalamazoo, MI a son of John and Mildred VanNortwick Merrifield and had been a lifelong area resident. Jim worked for over 45 years as a metal fabricator for several area manufacturers. He was a former member of Eagle's Aerie #526. Jim enjoyed sports especially NASCAR, football, baseball and bowling. As an avid outdoorsman, Jim loved to go up north to Irons camping with his wife, grandchildren and friends Dick and Jo Bryant. He also enjoyed hunting with his buddies and his weekend camping events at the races. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Russell VanNortwick and John Merrifield. On February 6, 1971, Jim was united in marriage with the former Betty Hagger, who survives. Also surviving are: four children, Kim Ken Bosscher of Hudsonville, Tonya Thomson-McDonald of Kalamazoo, Jim Sherri Merrifield of Alabama and Anthony Becky Merrifield of Portage; thirteen grandchildren; Betsy Conrad, Jessica, Molly, Kyle & Jamie will always have a special place in their hearts for "Rampa" for that was the special name that they gave to him. Jim was also blessed in the past few years when his family expanding with more grandchildren: Jason, Jennifer Jake, Rachel & Michael. In the past month Melissa, Dennis, Austin & Brianna, one great-grandchild; Kason, several nieces and nephews; and lifelong friends, Dick and Jo Bryant of Dorr. Services will be held 3:00 Thursday afternoon at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street, with Pastor Jim Dyke, officiating. Friends and family will gather for visitation at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 1:00. Cremation will follow services and private inurnment will take place at a later date.
