MCCARTHY, James H., M.D.
of Kalamazoo, Michigan Dr. James H. McCarthy, age 82, passed away on Monday evening, February 25, 2013 in Kalamazoo, MI. He was born October 26, 1930 in Flint, MI a son of Russell S. and Bernice L. Wilson McCarthy. After earning his degree as a pharmacist, Jim entered the US Army. During his time in the service he worked closely with many army doctors and decided that he would go to medical school. Jim earned a scholarship to Wayne State University and earned his medical degree while working nights as a pharmacist. Dr. McCarthy retired from private practice in Galesburg, MI. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. On May 8, 1954, Jim married the former Carol Askie, who preceded him in death on March 27, 2010. Jim was also preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law Jim Swain. Surviving are: five daughters, Jill Gary Grishaber of Richalnd, Kathryn McCarthy of Farmington Hills, Kelly McCarthy Mark Motz of Canton, Janice William Wellman of Livonia and Mary Kevin Hemenway of Kalamazoo; and eight grandchildren, Alex & Carrie Grishaber, Alison, Zachary & Miles Swain, Charlie & Sam Wellman and Leslie Hemenway. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Msgr. Michael Hazard at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 936 Lake St. at 11:00 Saturday morning, March 9, 2013. Private interment will take place at Ft.
