Went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at his residence with his family by his side. Jim was born August 17, 1931 in Albany, NY, the son of the Rev. Percy and Albertha Dykstra Kinkema. He served as a Hospital Corpsman in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Jim graduated from Hope College and received his Masters Degree from the University of Denver and was employed as a social worker for the State of Michigan for 25 years. He was a member of the Second Reformed Church and the Second Reformed Church Groundskeepers. He was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and Loaves and Fishes. On August 7, 1976, he was married in Kalamazoo to the former Mary Katherine Donahoe. Surviving are his wife Mary; 3 children, Steven Jill Kinkema , Janice Morton and fiancé Jim Coleman and Michael Laura Kinkema, all of Portage; 8 grandchildren, Ashley Jason Serne, Phillip, Paul and Michael Kinkema, Tanner and Vanessa Morton and Sarah and Louis Kinkema; a great-granddaughter Micciah Serne; a brother David Ruth Kinkema of North Canton, OH; nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 o'clock Sunday at the Second Reformed Church, 2323 Stadium Dr. with the Rev. Ralph Robrahn and the Rev. Don DeYoung officiating. Friends may meet the family beginning at 1:00 pm Sunday at the church. Inurnment with military honors will be at Ft. Custer National Cemetery on Monday at 1:30 pm. Those wishing to attend the committal at Ft. Custer should assemble in the Funeral Cortege Assembly Area at 1:15 pm. Memorial contributions in Jim's memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity, the Second Reformed Church Groundskeepers or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
