Formerly of Kalamazoo, MI Passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at the age of 79. James was born in Kalamazoo on February 14, 1935, the son of the late Lester George August Burgwald and Dorothy Ellen Cecelia Burgwald. He served with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and was a member of the V.F.W. Post # 15023. He was employed as a Public Safety Officer for the City of Kalamazoo for 26 years. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the National Association of Firefighters. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Margie Penny Parrett Johnson; four children, James P. Sue Johnson of Kalamazoo, Tom Michelle Johnson of Kalamazoo, Scott Vicki Johnson of Mobile, AL and Todd Johnson of Kalamazoo; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters and one brother, Zelma Belkoski, Norine Knowlton and Gene Lucy Burgwald; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Johnson; his adoptive parents, George L. Johnson and June A. Johnson; and three sisters and three brothers, Flo Burchett, Barbara DeBoer, Dorothy Burgwald, Frank Burgwald, Bob Burgwald and Walter Burgwald. Friends may visit with the family from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, November 30, 2014 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 South Burdick Street. The Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Monday, December 1, 2014 at the funeral home, officiated by Rev. James Dyke. Committal service with military honors will follow the funeral service at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Toys for Tots or the Wounded Warriors Project
