Age 85, of Venice, FL Passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 23, 2013. He was born on May 21, 1927 in Tampa, FL to Michael James and Florence Helen Gilmartin. He married Geraldine A. Minckler of Kalamazoo, MI in 1945, having one child, and later married Elayne D. Benzenberg in 1955 in Kalamazoo, MI. A graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School, Jim attended Western Michigan College and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, where he was awarded his D.D.S. degree in 1955. Following service as a Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corp in Orleans, France, he established private practices in Orange County, CA 15 years, Sacramento, CA 20 years, Fresno, CA 3 years, Port Charlotte, FL 4 years, and Englewood, FL 9 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and skiing. James is survived by his daughter Mrs. Charles Cathie Sundry of Chula Vista, CA and his grandchildren Mr. Haakon Sundry of Glendale, CA and Ms. Cailin Sundry of West Hollywood, CA, Dr. Richard Lillis Gilmartin, brother and sister-in-law of Adrian, MI, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by Elayne Gilmartin spouse, Michael James Gilmartin father, Florence Bailey mother, and Mary A. Doney sister. Services will be held on Thursday, March 7, at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park Chapel, 3941 South Westnedge Ave., Kalamazoo with Pastor Charles Sundry officiating. Interment to immediately follow. Friends and relatives are asked to consider, in lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.
