VAN LOO, Jacob M.
of Kalamazoo and Mesa, Arizona Jacob M. Van Loo, 86, of Kalamazoo and Mesa, Ariz., died Friday, August 29, 2008, in Kalamazoo. He was born June 6, 1922, in Kalamazoo to Leonard and Lena DeMoore Van Loo. Jake graduated from Central High School in Kalamazoo and served as a Machinist's Mate Third Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Margaret Peg Ford on May 7, 1949. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Western Michigan University. The family moved to Mesa in 1962. He taught fifth and sixth grades in Kalamazoo and Mesa until he retired in 1982. Jake served as a deacon and elder in several churches of the Reformed Church in America. Jake enjoyed bowling, playing softball and was an active member of the Velda Rose and Roadrunners Lions Clubs in Mesa. Preceding him in death were his parents, infant daughter Barbara Jean, and his wife of 54 years, Peg Van Loo. Jake married Gertrude Trudy Peterson, a former Central High classmate, on June 4, 2005. Survivors include his wife, Gertrude; brother Neil Van Loo of Kalamazoo, sister Martha Pharaoh of Boca Raton, Florida, children and their spouses: Carol Randy Swedlund of Prescott, Ariz., Jim Carol Van Loo of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Kathy Gary Rons of Chandler, Ariz.; grandchildren Eric and Roland Swedlund, James Jacob J.J., Kellianne, Joshua, Katelyn and Zackary Van Loo, and Nicholas Rons; several nieces and nephews; and his wife Gertrude's children, Thomas Mary Peterson of Evansville, Ind., David Lisa Peterson of Kalamazoo, and Susan Michael Wait of South Haven. Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at Bethany Reformed Church, with Pastor Robert Terwilliger officiating.
