STEVENS, Irma M. Comstock Died on Tuesday morning, April 3, 2007 at her residence with her family by her side. Irma was born December 13, 1910 in Freeport, IL, the daughter of Harry Blain Stocks and Maude S. Miller and had lived in Comstock since 1939. Irma was involved for many years with the Comstock Rebekah Lodge #411 where she held several offices, including Noble Grand and served as secretary for over 25 years. She was an avid reader of books and read the newspaper from front to back and enjoyed crossword puzzles. Irma was also active in the Comstock Community Center. She met her husband Edward James Stevens on a blind date. He proposed to her in a canoe on Reeds Lake in East Grand Rapids, MI by saying ?do you think you could live with me for the rest of your life.? Her answer was ?I think maybe I could.? They were united in marriage in Kalamazoo on November 23, 1935. He preceded her in death in 1983. She was also preceded by a daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Mickey Knapp, by a granddaughter Brenda Barden and by 4 brothers, John Millard Stocks, Henry Merwin Stocks, Wesley Marlyn Stocks and Kenneth Melvin Stocks. Surviving are 2 sons, James Edward Vernadine Stevens of New Bern, NC and David Arthur Julia Stevens of Comstock; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; 2 Sisters, Berniece Stocks of Freeport, IL and Janice Smith of Lena, IL and a sister-in-law June Stocks of Grand Rapids, MI; several nieces and nephews. Private family services will be held in the chapel at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery at 1:00 o?clock Tuesday with Chaplain Theda McBride officiating. Memorial contributions in Irma?s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
