DeYOUNG, Irene "Ike"
Of Kalamazoo Ike passed away Thursday morning, March 1, 2012 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. She was born March 2, 1925 in Sheldon, Iowa, one of seven children to Peter and Amy Kuiper Boer and moved to Michigan while she was a toddler. Growing up in Holland on Lake Michigan, Ike attended Hope College and developed a passion for water skiing. She was a professional water skier, and during the winter months, she would travel to Florida and the Wisconsin Dells to water ski. On July 9, 1955, Ike was united in marriage to Robert A. DeYoung. She was a member of Centerpoint Church, and enjoyed playing golf, and was a great bridge player. Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Dr. Robert DeYoung; their daughter, Diane Bruce Callander of Kalamazoo; three grandchildren, Lindsay Nathan Carr, Ashley Thomas Majdan and Whitney Justin PuenteCallander; expected great-granddaughter, Cyleigh Irene Carr; two sisters, Margaret Boer of Kalamazoo and Bette Slikkers of South Haven; two brothers, Ed Bobbie Boer of Holland and Calvin Karen Boer of Holland; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents and two brothers, Peter and Gordon Boer. Funeral services for Ike will be at 1:00 pm on Tuesday at Centerpoint Church, 2345 N. 10th Street, with Pastor Jeff Porte officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 5-8 pm on Monday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street. Private interment will be in Grand Prairie Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to Centerpoint Church Deacon's Fund or Kalamazoo Gospel Mission.
