Formerly of Estero, Florida Irene passed away Sunday evening, October 19, 2008 at The Springs at Bronson Place. She was born December 22, 1918 in Kalamazoo, to the late Swier and Marie Abrahams Smith. On June 5, 1939, Irene was united in marriage to James J. Benzenberg. Following Jim's retirement in 1985, they moved to Florida where they resided for 22 years, until moving back to Kalamazoo in 2007. Surviving are their 3 children, Judith Leonard Grabowski of Vicksburg, Robert Diana Benzenberg of Holland, and Mark Benzenberg of Estero, FL; 5 grandchildren, Julie Grabowski, Robert Sherry Grabowski, Joseph Grabowski, Kristin Rich Vanpraet, and Erin Benzenberg; 3 great-grandchildren, Hannah, Jenna, and Fallon; and 2 brothers, Wesley Cora Smith of Gobles and Clifford Phyllis Smith of Kalamazoo. Preceding her in death were her husband of 68 years, James Benzenberg; her parents; and 1 sister, Genevieve Potts. Memorial services for Mrs. Benzenberg will be at 1:30 PM on Friday at The Fountains at Bronson Place, 1700 Bronson Way, Kalamazoo, with Rev. Roger Kleinheksel officiating. Private interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street.
