Herbert C. ''Herb'' Vander Horst

March 15, 1927 — February 21, 2007

VANDER HORST, Herbert C., ?Herb? Richland Passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2007. He was born March 15, 1927 in Kalamazoo, the son of Joost and Alida Slegers Vander Horst and was a lifelong resident of the Kalamazoo area. Herb was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church and was a part-owner and operator of the Chicken Coop Restaurants. During WW II, he served his country in the Merchant Marines and during the Korean Conflict, he served in the United States Army, as a Sergeant and was awarded the Silver Star for Bravery. He was a member of the Comstock VFW, Post 6252. Herb enjoyed hunting pheasants with his lifelong friends and telling war stories. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren and fishing in the pond on his property in Richland. Herb was very generous to others and loved his family. On November 17, 1955 he married the former Reneldia Lalk, who survives. Herb is also survived by his sons, Joseph W. Judy Vander Horst and James A. Tammy Vander Horst both of Kalamazoo; 4 grandchildren, Christina, Jonathan, Daniel and David Vander Horst; his brother, James Carol Vander Horst of Portage; his sisters, Anita Paul Ruimveld, of Kalamazoo, Johanna Marvin Niewonder of Plainwell, and Gertrude Willard Nieboer of Gun Lake; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 Noon Friday in the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., with Rev. Dr. Warren Lammers, officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Custer National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 5-7 PM. Memorial contributions may be given to the Kalamazoo Christian School Association.
