Of Kalamazoo Went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 21, 2010. Henry was born December 4, 1924 in Kalamazoo, MI, a son of Emmo and Tina Mejeur Sportel. He had been a life-long resident of Kalamazoo and was self-employed with Sportel Brothers Masonry until 1973. He was employed by Kalamazoo College as a mason until his retirement in 1987. He was also a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church where he enjoyed participating in Bible study and activities for Senior citizens. He was preceded in death by his parents, and step-mother, Anna Mejeur Sportel; three brothers-in-law: Chuck King, Hank Post, Carl Flamm and a sister-in-law, Millie Sportel. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Henrietta Alphenaar Sportel; his children, Jim Roberta Sportel of Kalamazoo, Joyce Wilbur Maas of Sioux Center, IA, Joel Deia Sportel of Kalamazoo and Judy Tim Baker of Kalamazoo; 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; sisters, Henrietta Post, Anne King and Berdine "Bea" Flamm; brothers, Gary Evelyn Sportel and Art Jan Sportel; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Monday, April 26 at the Second Christian Reformed Church, 3015 Nichols Rd., with Dr. Warren E. Lammers officiating. Private interment in Grand Prairie Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday from 3-6 pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Hank's memory be made to Park Village Pines or Alamo Nursing Home.
