VANDER ROEST, Helena, M.
Portage On Saturday, September 27, 2008. Helena was promoted to Glory and went home to be with her Lord and Savior. She was born April 3, 1918 in Kalamazoo, a daughter of John and Mary De Smit Verhulst and had lived in the Kalamazoo area for many years. Helena was a member of Faith Church, where she was very active as a Sunday School teacher, Youth Group leader and a Young at Heart leader. She was also involved in family visiting, the Lay Witness Mission and volunteered at Borgess Hospital Pastoral Care Program. On August 20, 1940, she married Carl Vander Roest, Sr.. who survives. Also surviving are their children, Carl Elaine Vander Roest, Jr. of Portage, Rev. John Judie Vander Roest of Zeeland, David Mary Ann Vander Roest of Kalamazoo and Marlene Jim Zink of Pullman; 11 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a brother-in-law, Mel Woolley of Kalamazoo; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three sisters, Elizabeth Weessies, Mary De Young and Ardith Woolley. Following a private family committal, a Memorial Service will be conducted on Thursday at 11:00 AM in Faith Church, 7200 Angling Rd. with Rev. Roy Ackerman officiating. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Memorial contributions may be directed to Faith Church.
