SILDEGS, Helen of Kalamazoo
Helen Gallija Sildegs Kalnins was born March 26, 1916, in Arrisa, Russia; and passed away October 10, 2010, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She attended Theater School and took voice lessons in the Latvian Conservatory of Music, Riga, Latvia. Her acting career commenced in Daile Theater in Riga. In 1942, she married Arnold Sildegs who passed away on October 3, 2003. In 1944, the Sildegs left Latvia and spent the next six years in Displaced Persons Camps in Germany where she participated in the exile Latvian theater troupes in Munich and Fischbach/Nuernberg. The Sildegs arrived in Kalamazoo in 1950 where Helen found employment at Jolly Kids. In the 1950's and 60's she participated in the Kalamazoo Latvian Theater troupe as a director and actor. She was a member of the Kalamazoo Latvian Evangelical Lutheran United Church. A Funeral Service for Helen will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, October 21st at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. with Rev. Biruta Puike officiating.
