Helen Margaret Schwencer, 88 of Portage, passed away unexpectedly doing what she loved, enjoying a car ride with her daughters. She was born in Battle Creek on September 2, 1935, to Milan George and Clara May Sutfin.
Helen married the love of her life, Norman, on July 19, 1952. The two were inseparable and enjoyed everything together including dancing, playing cards riding motorcycles, snowmobiles, and dune buggies. Helen loved to go for rides to anywhere with any form of transportation. She enjoyed the scenery and sounds of many destinations.
Helen was a gifted crocheter and knitter, having made many garments for her beloved children and grandchildren, they will cherish these forever.
Helen is survived by her four children, Norma Postula, Donald Schwencer, Margaret Boynton, and Carole (Donald) Lyon; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; siblings Albert Sutfin, Edna Sneed, and Betty Harrison; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Milan and Clara Sutfin; daughter, Diana French; granddaughter, Candy Trumbull; grandson James Schwencer; son-in-law Steve Postula; and brothers Alfred and Allen Lee Sutfin.
Helen will be laid to rest beside her husband at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens in Battle Creek on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, with a committal service in the chapel at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Helen may be made to a charity of choice.
