SEMENCZUK, Harry J.
Of Portage Harry passed away Thursday evening, June 18, 2009 at Tendercare of Portage. He was born September 3, 1931 in Vicksburg, the son of Mike and Sophia Wojewoda Semenczuk. A 1949 graduate of Vicksburg High School, Harry was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving 3 years during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1954. He was employed by the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier for over 30 years until his retirement in 1989. Prior to working for the USPS, Harry owned and operated Jay News in Kalamazoo. During his retirement, Harry worked as a ticket taker at Miller Auditorium and also delivered flowers for Rose Wood Florists. He was a founding member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church and also a longtime member of Knights of Columbus. Harry enjoyed golfing, bowling, and loved to play the odds. On August 28, 1954, Harry was united in marriage to Arline Dettmann. Preceding him in death are his wife of 51 years, Arline Semenczuk; his parents, Mike and Sophia Semenczuk; and brother, Joe Semenczuk. Surviving are 5 children, Stacy Paul Shrode of Appleton, WI, Michael Semenczuk of Vicksburg, Sandi Penar of Portage, Sheri Dan Harding of Portage, and Steven Kim Semenczuk of Hudson, OH; 11 grandchildren, Andrew Shrode, Naomi and Kendra Semenczuk, Kelby and Hannah Penar, Rex and Chelsea Harding, and Annie, Mary, Samuel, and Maxwell Semenczuk; 4 sisters-in-law, Cecelia Norm Skippers, Faye Merlin Hines, and Nancee Terry Newell Beach; brother-in-law, Robert Jean Dettmann; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Tuesday at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1150 W. Centre Ave. Interment will follow in Portage South Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Monday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave., with a rosary at 7:30 PM. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to Alzheimer's Association or West Michigan Cancer Center.
