ZEMMER, Harry R. M.D.

Formerly of Lapeer, MI Harry R. Zemmer, M.D., age 91, died on Thursday evening, September 13, 2012, in Kalamazoo, MI. Dr. Zemmer was born in Tanzania, Africa to missionary parents Henry and Edith Zemmer on August 27, 1921. Dr. Zemmer graduated from Lapeer High School in 1931; Moody Bible Institute in 1945, Western Michigan University in 1949, University of Michigan Medical School in 1953, Internal Guthrie Clinic of Pennsylvania in 1954, Tropical Medical Course in Belgium 1955; and together with his wife and family was a missionary in Zaire, Africa until 1960 when they fled for their lives. Returning to Lapeer, MI he did his residency for General Surgery at McLaren Hospital 1961-64, and opened his private practice in 1965 retiring in 1989. A member of the Fellow American College of Surgeons, Dr. Zemmer was also a member of the Lapeer County Medical Association, Lapeer Chapter of American Cancer Society, Lapeer County Representative of the American Lung Association, Medical advisor for Lapeer County Diabetes Association, American College of Surgeons and former Chief of Staff for the Lapeer County General Hospital, and Lapeer County Board of Health. Harry enjoyed serving the Lord and served on the official board of the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Flint. He had been a Bible Teacher throughout his lifetime and was a former member of First Baptist Church of Lapeer. He served on the Advisory Council for Baptist Mid-Missions of Cleveland, Ohio and the Advisory Board for Cornerstone University of Grand Rapids, MI. After retiring he travelled to multiple missionary hospitals in Africa and Bangladesh. In his free time, Harry enjoyed hunting, tennis and working outdoors. Harry was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Hazel Vasbinder. Surviving are: his loving wife of 67 years, Adelaid A. Zemmer; four children and their spouses, Luan Dr. Thomas Jackson of Lapeer, MI, David Patty Zemmer of Brazil, Susan Mark Pierson of Griffith, IN, and Deborah Kenneth Mroczeck of Mattawan, MI; twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Sunday today from 2-4 & 6-8pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. Funeral services will be held 11:00 Monday morning at Berean Baptist Church, 7813 South 12th Street. Graveside services will be held 12:00 Tuesday afternoon in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Lapeer.
