Kalamazoo Harriet K. Sun Schultz, 84, of Kalamazoo, was gently lifted into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on the evening of November 17, 2007, at Friendship Village Health Center, Kalamazoo, MI. Harriet ?Sunny? Schultz was born February 26, 1923, in Toledo, OH. Mrs. Schultz?s father, Peter Klotz Sun, was the retired former owner of the Sun Brothers Progressive World Circus, a railroad show that traveled through the eastern and southeastern United States from 1892 to 1918. Her mother Vira Maddock Sun was the thirteenth child of first-generation Irish immigrants. Harriet joined three brothers, Peter, Paul and Jack Sun, who went on to distinguish themselves in business and the armed services. Harriet earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Bowling Green State University in 1945 and a Masters of Arts degree in Counseling/Guidance from Western Michigan University in 1970, with additional graduate studies at Central Michigan University and Toledo University from 1979 to 1983. From 1946 to 1983, Harriet taught physical education and coached various high school sports in Maumee and Toledo, OH, and in Kalamazoo, MI. She closed her career as teacher / consultant and counselor for the Alternative Education Program in Monroe County, MI 1972 ? 1983. Harriet is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, James R. Schultz, an accomplished businessman and lifelong sailor; by three daughters: Sandra Schultz Mengel of Grosse Pointe Park, MI; Suzanne Schultz Mellinger Todd W. of Kalamazoo, MI; and Nancy M. Schultz of Holland, OH; by three grandchildren: Meredith A. Mengel, Celia C. Mengel, and Cameron J. Mellinger; by her brother Col. Jack K. Sun U.S. Army, Ret. of Trappe, MD, and by nieces and nephews who meant so much to her throughout her life. During their marriage, the Schultzes lived in Ohio, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Florida. The family?s fondest memories are of nearly 30 years in the Lake Erie house in LaSalle, MI. During her life, Harriet was associated with Delta Gamma sorority; Friends in Council; P.E.O.; Girl Scouts of America; and various Sunday School programs, Hospital Auxiliary groups, and charitable organizations. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2007, at 1:00 PM in the First Presbyterian Church, 321 W. South St., Kalamazoo, MI. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Harriet?s honor may be made to the Alzheimer?s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633; Heartland Hospice of Michigan, 8075 Creekside Drive, Portage, MI 49024; or Friendship Village Health Center Activities Fund, 1400 North Drake Road, Kalamazoo, MI 49006.
