Kucinich, Harriet Anna Beattie
Of Mattawan Passed away Sunday, August 26, 2012. Age 92 years. Harriet was born June 1, 1920 in Orangeville, MI, the oldest of four children of the late Marshall and Mildred Warner Beattie. She loved gardening, reading and traveling. Her travels included visiting over 20 countries, enjoying adventures like riding an elephant, zip lining, white water rafting, kayaking and many more. Harriet retired after 33 years as Food Service Director at Mattawan Consolidated Schools, while also attending Kalamazoo Valley Community College. During school summer breaks she was known as "Casey", cooking three meals a day at Camp Shawadassee for 100 campers and staff. She supervised the Mattawan Alumni Association for 19 years along with the late Edith Moyle Boyle and also loved preparing the 2nd Friday soup suppers for 19 years at Mattawan Congregational Church, where she was also known as the "Pie Lady". She was a very active member of the church before its name change. Harriet was also very civic minded serving 17 years on the Village of Mattawan Planning Commission, numerous years on the Antwerp Township Planning Commission, 14 years on the Mattawan Village Council as Council member with 10 of those years as President-Pro-Tem. She retired from the Village Council because of ill health early in 2012. Surviving are three children, Carol Daly of Mattawan, Sally Larry Bingham of Schoolcraft and Jim Margaret Kucinich of Berea, OH; ten grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one sister, Bobbie Buck of Kalamazoo; and one brother, Gordon Dot Beattie of Minneapolis, MN. She was preceded in death by one brother, Marshall Beattie. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St. Funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 31, 2012. Pastor Ron Simcox will officiate with burial in Maple Grove Cemetery in Mattawan. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southwest Michigan or the Kalamazoo Animal Rescue.
