Harriet Alice Grannan, 89, of Kalamazoo, passed away on June 30, 2024, in Kalamazoo, MI, with her daughters by her side.
Harriet, a dedicated learner, was born on July 5, 1934, to Harold and Ruby (Schmidt) Perkins in Scotts, MI. She graduated from Scott's High School and continued her education, earning her associate degree. On February 16, 1957, she married Dean, and they made their home in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Harriet's professional journey led her to a fulfilling career in the Food Service industry, from which she retired.
Harriet's impact on the community was profound. She was a dedicated member of various volunteer organizations, including Volunteer for Helping Hands, Happy People, and Delivered Meals for Wheels. She made sure each holiday delivery had a special tin with goodies. Her passion for helping others extended to crocheting hats for organizations such as the Salvation Army Babies Borgess and the Behaver unit. Harriet and her husband were both clowns; they did parades and burn camps for kids; they traveled to Texas and helped put on a Christmas party for the children in Mexico on Christmas day. Harriet was very active in 4H. One year, she was Cherry Pie Queen. She loved any needle art and beat her daughters at Fairs. Harriet's selflessness and dedication to the community will be remembered by all who knew her.
Harriet's love for her family was unwavering. She is survived by two daughters, Denise Huzjak of Kalamazoo, MI, and Darlene (Bill) Sharp of Vicksburg, MI; six grandchildren: Dennise Cole, Matthew (Amber) Cole, Julie (Steve) Birman, Jamie Cole, Ken Cole, Danny Cole; and two great-grandchildren, Jennifer Birman and Jeffery Birman, as well as her brother, John (Donna) Perkins. Her family was her pride and joy, and she cherished every moment she spent with them.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Grannan, who passed away April 30, 2009, in Texarkana, TX; her father, Harold Edward Perkins; mother, Ruby Lorene (Schmidt) Perkins; son, Mark Grannan; sisters, Beverly Smith and Norma Jean Davenport, son-in-law, Tim Redmond and Nicholas Huzjak.
Graveside services will be on July 16, 2024, at 2:00 PM, with Reverend Doctor Mona Joslyn officiating at Harrison Cemetery in Scotts RS Avenue, Scotts, MI, where Harriet will be laid to rest.
