Harold proudly served his country during World War II in the US Army, where he was part of the Antitank and Antiaircraft divisions. After returning home, he pursued his passion for knowledge, earning a degree from Western Michigan College and later achieving a master’s certification in Business Management from Kalamazoo College.
On September 5, 1947, Harold married the late Dorothy Ruth Poolman. Together, they raised four children: Kenneth H. (Jeanne), Karen L., Joseph R. (Sue), and Janice K., all of whom survive him. Harold was also blessed with grandchildren, Angeline Polderman, Sarah Ketchum, Jeffrey Brant, Brittany Hartman, and several great-grandchildren, who brought him endless joy and pride.
Harold's professional journey led him to the Upjohn Company in 1948, where he devoted over four decades to the Chemical Division, rising to the role of supervisor and earning the esteemed Upjohn Award in 1972. His dedication, wisdom, and steadfast leadership left an indelible mark on his colleagues and the company.
Outside of his professional life, Harold was an avid outdoorsman who found immense joy in activities such as bicycling, kayaking, gardening, birding, hiking, swimming, and golf. He was never one to leave a dance floor empty or a song unsung. His adventurous spirit and love for nature were an inspiration to all who knew him.
In accordance with Harold's wishes, there will be no formal visitation or service. Instead, a gathering for internment will take place at Riverside Cemetery, 1015 Gull Road, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49048, on August 3rd at 2:00 pm, providing an opportunity for loved ones to pay their respects and celebrate his remarkable life.
