Gwendoline D. "Gwen" Cox

d. July 3, 2012

COX, Mrs. Gwendoline D. "Gwen"
Kalamazoo, MI Gwen Cox found peace from dementia at last on July 3, 2012. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her, especially her daughters, Cheryl B. Cox, of San Jose, CA, and Glynis J. Bill Fenn of Kalamazoo, MI, her sisters, Barbara Center, of Homosassa Springs, FL and Vera Zahm of Lambertville, Ml, and many nieces and nephews. Born in Bedford, England, Gwen joined the Women's Royal Navy WRNs during World War II and served her country proudly. After meeting and marrying her husband, Bill, Gwen became a war bride, coming to the U.S.A. on the first "bride ship", the U.S.S. Mauritania. Gwen taught school in Brunswick and Brownhelm Ohio for several years, then moved to Midland, Michigan, where she was an active member of the Kings Daughters, Faculty Dames, Midland Women's Club, Midland Garden Club, and Chapter CZ of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was a popular and well-known speaker around the state, giving presentations on English history, royalty, witchcraft and gardens. In 1985, Gwen moved with her husband to North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. While there, she served as a lay reader at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, and was a member of W.A.V.E.S. and P.E.O. After moving to Kalamazoo in 2005, Gwen attended the First Methodist Church and was a member of Chapter EZ of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Gwen was pre-deceased by her husband, Bill, in 2000. She will be remembered as a loving mother and wife, a loyal friend, an avid reader of books and a seeker of knowledge, with a wonderful sense of humor. A memorial service will be held in North Myrtle Beach at a later date. Rest in peace, Mum. You have earned it. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Grand Strand Humane Society, 3241 Mr. Joe White Avenue, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29577; Cottey College, 1000 West Austin Blvd., Nevada, MO 64772; or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, 222 N.
