Mattawan Passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010 from mesothelomia. He was born June 28, 1940 in Chickasha, OK, the son of Grady W. and Emma Lee Kirk Biby and lived in the Mattawan area for many years. Grady graduated from Chickasha High School in 1959 and enlisted in the United States Navy, retiring after 20 years of service in 1979. His primary assignment was aboard nuclear subs. During his tours of duty, he earned a BS in Business Administration and a second BS in Mechanical Engineering. After retiring from the Navy, he joined Consumers Energy, retiring in 1995 from the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in South Haven. He then started his own company, Custom Surfacing, LLC, with the help of his brother-in-law, William Kenbeek. Never one to sit back idly, Grady was always willing to pursue new endeavors and was employed by a local construction company and the US Census Bureau, until his mesothelioma forced his resignation. Grady was active on the Texas Township Zoning Board of Appeals until he was elected to the Kalamazoo County Commission in 2002, a position he held until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Delorus Ann Cheatwood; a brother, Lucky Charley Biby; and a son, Justin Frederick Kerr on December 28, 2008. Grady is survived by his wife, Linda Kerr of Mattawan; his children Michael Glen Biby of Midland, Bruce Jon Roberta Biby of Grand Rapids, Michelle Gordon Henry of IN and Eric Jon Priscilla Kerr of Mattawan; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Mary Logan Waldrup of Oklahoma City, OK; a brother, Luryl Jay "Butch" Betty Biby of Purcell, OK; many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday at 2:00 PM in the Calvary Reformed Church, 7829 S. 5th St., with Pastor Greg Van Heukelom officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the International Mesothelioma Program, 75 Francis St., Boston, MA 02115.
