SMITH, Gladys Louise
of Kalamazoo Gladys went to be with her Lord on October 25, 2011, following a period of declining health. She was born on January 24, 1909, in a small community near Tacoma, Washington. On January 28, 1928, she was married to Clarence E. Smith and the couple had four children. A son, C. Edward Smith and his wife, Louise live in Kalamazoo and a daughter, Marilyn Blackie and her husband, Bruce live in San Mateo, California. Preceding her in death were her husband in 1994 as well as a 2 ½ year old daughter, Marion in 1934 and a son, Donald some years later. They also had eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In her earlier years she and her husband enjoyed traveling and entertaining. They had a summer home on Grand Lake, north of Alpena, where they enjoyed visits from family and friends. Winters were spent at Light and Life Park, a church camp, near Lakeland, Florida. Gladys was an excellent seamstress as well as working with ceramics. The funeral service will be held at Bethany Reformed Church 1833 S. Burdick St. at 2:00 PM Friday, October 28, 2011, with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. A private interment will be held in Spring Arbor Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bethany Reformed Church, Hospice Care of SW Michigan, or Park Village Pines.
