HAWKINS, Gerald A. "Jerry"
Of Kalamazoo, MI Passed away on July 8, 2009 at Bronson Hospital. Jerry was born October 31, 1935 in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of John and Alta Riddle Hawkins and was a lifelong resident here. He graduated from State High School and later attended WMU. He honorably served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Jerry was employed for 31 years at General Motors where he was a general foreman in shipping. Jerry was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and a former member of the Elks Club. He was a loving husband to his wife of 50 years, the former Shirley Robinson to whom he was married on June 6, 1959. Jerry was preceded in death by a son Gerald Alan "Chip" Hawkins, II and by a brother John Richard Hawkins. Surviving besides Shirley are 4 children, Pamela Jeffrey Philipp of Kalamazoo, Mark Alan Hawkins and Lori Petrill of Chesterfield, MI, Shelly David Leonhard of Brentwood, TN and Kimberly John Horvath of Big Rapids, MI; 12 grandchildren, Megan, Melissa and Adam Philipp, Spencer, Kendra and Cooper Hawkins, Ryan, Kyle and Haley Leonhard, John David, Kayla and Morgan Horvath; a sister Lynda Repins of Portage; several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 1:00 o'clock on Monday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St. with the Rev. Fr. James Richardson officiating. Interment with military honors at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. Friends may meet the family on Saturday from 6-8 pm and on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions in Jerry's name may be made to the Lions Clubs "Leader Dogs for the Blind" or to St. Augustine Catholic Church.
