Gene joined the great cloud of witnesses in heaven on August 11, 2015 after a sudden heart attack while walking with his wife. Gene is survived by his wife of 47 years Karen (Drew) Platte, and two siblings Dr. Jay Platte and Marilyn (Platte) Eskew. He was a caring father of three children Karla (Platte) Ivey, Keith Platte, Kevin Platte, and their spouses Michael, Holly and Lisa. He was also a loving grandfather of six grandchildren Joshua, Megan, Rachel, Nathan, Lucas, Samuel, and many grandchildren-in-love who include but are not limited to Carmen, Geneva, Gillian, Melissa and Claudia. He was preceded in death by his parents Albert Platte and Evelyn (Mudgett) Platte.
Gene was a passionate lover of God and people. There was nothing more important to him than seeing others draw closer to Christ. This was his life's work. Gene and Karen ministered with Youth for Christ for over 25 years, InterServe USA for 15 years, and Calvary Bible Church for the last 40 years. Gene began and now ends his ministry with I Thessalonians 5:24 "Faithful is He who calls you, who also will do it." This verse has been repeatedly proven true in the life and ministry of the Platte family and the best way to honor Gene would be to bravely trust in its promises as we glorify God with our lives.
Memorial gifts can be directed to the ministries that were at the heart of Gene's passion. Send gifts in lieu of flowers to Kalamazoo Youth Christ, Urban Alliance, Calvary Bible Church - Missions Fund, or Interserve USA.
Visitation will be Friday August 14, 2015 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49009. A Worship Celebration service honoring Gene's life will be held at Calvary Bible Church, 855 S. Drake Road, Kalamazoo, MI 49009 at 2 pm on Saturday August 15, 2015. A cake reception to follow.
