MOERDYK, Garret J.
of Kalamazoo, Michigan Garret Jacobus Moerdyk, age 85, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2012 in Kalamazoo. Garret was born October 29, 1926, in Kalamazoo, the son of Thomas and Cornelia Meeuwse Moerdyk. He was a lifelong area resident and had served in the U.S. Army following WW II. Garret was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation, where he was a longtime consistory member and had served on many denominational committees. Garret had been employed with the Glen Rynbrand Company and later with the Wheeler-Blaney Company from which he retired. On June 22, 1949, he was united in marriage to Alida Boerkoel Moerdyk, who preceded him in death on December 7, 2008. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, William Moerdyk and Cornelia Blok; and a daughter, Betty Sporte in 2007. Surviving are three daughters, Carol James Greene of Scottsdale, AZ, Geraldine Gary Bleeker of Grand Rapids, and Alice Stuart Ekema of Kalamazoo; a son-in-law, Thomas Sporte of Jenison; 20 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; in-laws, Cornelis Blok, Jane John Mast, and Cornelius Josephine Boerkoel, and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 27, from 1-4 and 5-8 PM at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. A Funeral Service will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, August 28, at the Netherlands Reformed Congregation 108 Pratt Rd. with Rev. G.J. Baan officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park South. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Garret's memory may be directed to the Providence Christian School or Park Village Pines. The family wishes to thank his physicians and the staff at Borgess Medical Center, Tendercare of Portage and Park Village Pines for their loving care.
