JOHNSON, Frederick O.
Of Kalamazoo On July 9, 2011, Frederick Oscar Johnson went to be with his Lord surrounded by his loving family. Fred was born on April 12, 1915 in Kendall, Michigan the son of Oscar and Leta Wesler Johnson. Fred was employed at Michigan Bell Telephone for thirty-three years as motor equipment foreman in Battle Creek & building maintenance supervisor in Kalamazoo. He was very active in Oshtemo Township serving as a trustee and serving on the zoning board throughout the 1970's & 1980's which he enjoyed very much. He was an active member of Hope Reformed Church in Kalamazoo for sixty years. His life always involved his love for his church, family and friends. A special place in Fred's life was Manitoulin Island in Ontario, Canada where he spent part of every summer since 1946 enjoying his cabin and very special friends. Fred was united in marriage to Emogene Bosker Johnson on October 28, 1938 who preceded him in death October 2, 1985. Fred was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. Surviving are his three children, Alan and Darlene Johnson of Schoolcraft, Judi and Jim Ziozios of Saginaw, and Lois and Jim Herder of Kalamazoo; ten grandchildren, Jeff and Tiffany Ziozios, Tampa, Florida, Julie and William Kolobaric, Saginaw, Jaime and Phil Minch, Bay City, Jennie Ziozios Drew Jordan, Washington D.C., Jodie Ziozios, Saginaw, Paul and LeAnn Johnson, Kalamazoo, Christa Johnson, Manistee, Andy and Kara Herder, Caledonia, Bryan and Emily Herder, Kalamazoo, and Scotty Herder, Kalamazoo; eleven great-grandchildren, Madalyn and Seth Johnson, James and Emily Stewart, Jacob Wilson and Nikolas Minch, Aubrey, Logan, and Kyle Herder, Caleb and Luke Herder and Alec Johnson; also many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Dale Johnson, and sister in law, Betty "Pumpkin" Johnson. On behalf of Fred we give our special thanks to Charlie Lucas and Dani Lucas as caregivers who gave their love and friendship to bring so much joy to his life. Funeral services for Fred will be at 2:00 PM on Tuesday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, with Rev. Kenneth E. VanderBroek officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM on Monday today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan or Alzheimer's Association.
