HOWING, Frederick
of Kalamazoo, Michigan Passed away January 9, 2009 at his home. He was born February 19, 1935 in Kalamazoo, to the late Nicholas and Tillie VanderVeen Howing. Fred was united in marriage on May 27, 1955, for a loving 53 years, to the former Ellen Siemsen, who survives. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central in 1953. Fred was selflessly devoted to his family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren, which were the pride and joy of his life. He had a love of God and compassion for the Kalamazoo community. From his parent's teachings and direction, he loved the outdoors and all of nature in general. As a young child, he enjoyed camping with his parents on Beaver Island, and eventually achieved his dream of owning his 2nd home for 33 years there. This was a favorite place for him to spend time with his family. He was President and owner of Howing Insurance Agency, Inc. He was a life member of Third Christian Reformed Church. He was also a member of the Kalamazoo Rotary Club, AMBUCS, Chamber of Commerce and Commercial Line Underwriter organization. Also surviving Fred are his children, Deborah Steven Terpstra of Kalamazoo and Tom Mary Howing of Ada, MI; grandchildren, Jeffrey Kelly Terpstra, Stephanie Craig Gernaat, Nicholas, Andrew and Matthew Howing; great grandchild, Reese; twin brother, Theodore Howing; sister, Genevieve Brussee; sister-in-law, Paula Ken Stahl; several nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews. A memorial service will take place Wednesday, 1:00PM at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street, where family will greet friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8:00PM. Rev.Dr. Kenneth Baker will officiate services. Memorials may be directed to Beaver Island Christian Church or Kalamazoo Christian School Association. Please see
