Kalamazoo On June 11, 2011, Florence went home to be with her Lord and Savior. She was born October 2, 1915 in Kalamazoo, one of eleven children of John and Helen Steinhaus Gernaat and was a lifelong resident of the Kalamazoo area. She was raised on a celery farm, where she worked in the celery fields from an early age, then worked at Gibson Guitar Company during WW II. After adopting their children, Florence did housekeeping to add to their income. Nicholas and Florence loved camping and made several trips to Alaska, including a 6 month stay to help care for their grandchildren. They were extremely active and involved grandparents, ready to help with the grandchildren at any time. Florence was a member of Northern Heights Christian Reformed Church, where she was very active in the Ladies Guild, taught Sunday School and worked on many celebrations at church, such as weddings and funerals. On July 24, 1937, she married Nicholas R. Cramer, who preceded her in death on November 24, 2001. She was also preceded by 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Florence is survived by her children, Dave Kathy Cramer of AK and Mary Ray Gardner of Comstock; grandchildren, Chad & Renee Gardner and Eric & Mara Cramer; great grandchildren, Nicholas Gardner, Ethan, Sara and Rylee Cramer and Lucas Wrobel; sisters, Helena, Dena and Alice Tillie; brothers, Philip Albert and John, Jr.; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:00 PM in the Northern Heights Christian Reformed Church, 1454 West E Avenue, with Mr. Duane DeHaan officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Northern Heights Christian Reformed Church, Heartland Hospice or Gull Arbor Senior Living.
