Kalamazoo, MI Evelyn Ann Huntington Weeks, age 73, died unexpectedly at her home on Sunday evening, September 9, 2012. She was born on September 21, 1938, in Battle Creek, MI, a daughter of Robert E. and Myrtle B. Palmiter Huntington, Sr. Evelyn retired from the Department of Defense after 27 ½ years of civilian service: 22 years with the Defense Logistics Service Center in Battle Creek, MI and 5 ½ years with the Defense Finance and Accounting service in Columbus, OH. Upon her retirement she moved to Kannapolis, NC in November of 1992. Evelyn worked for RCW Express Freight Services, Inc. in Kannapolis from September 1995 through November 1998. She spent the summer months in North Carolina and the winters in Englewood, FL. She was an avid bowler for 40 years. Evelyn served as Director on the Board of Directors of the Marshall, MI Women's Bowling Association; League Vice President in Columbus, OH; First Vice President on the Board of Directors of Salisbury, NC Women's Bowling Association in Kannapolis, NC; and President of the Polyoaks Senior League in Englewood, FL. During her residency in Florida, Evelyn served as Treasurer for two years on the Polynesian Village Social Club and Secretary for two years on the Polynesian Villager's Association, Inc. Board of Directors. Evelyn was a member of the American Association of Retired People AARP and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She supported the Battered Women's and Children Center CVAN in Concord NC, various nursing and assisted living facilities in North Carolina and Florida and the Linus Project by making and donating hundreds of homemade afghans of all sizes. Evelyn was preceded in death by a son, James R. Weeks, three brothers, Robert Jr., Kenneth and Verne Huntington, a sister, Norma E. Bachman and her parents. Evelyn is survived by: two sons, Gary D. Weeks of Denver, CO and Joseph R. Chelsea Weeks, Sr. of Schoolcraft, MI; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. James R. Weeks Cindy of Kannapolis, NC; five grandchildren, Joseph R. Janna Weeks, Jr. of Vicksburg, MI, Adam C. Weeks of Brandon, FL, Nicole A. Lawrence of Battle Creek, MI, Michael McHugh of Kannapolis, NC and Angela Pierce of Cincinnati, OH; seven great-grandchildren, Sean Bailey Weeks, Connor Donovan Weeks, Ezra Pierce, Malichi Pierce, Gweneth McHugh, Liam McHugh and Dominic Weeks; two sisters, Mary Lou Frey of Delton, MI and Beverly J. Watland of Merced, CA; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 Wednesday evening at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick Street, with Pastor Brian Bunch, officiating. Evelyn's family will receive guests prior to the service beginning at 5pm. Burial will be held 2:00 Saturday afternoon in Westlawn Memorial Park in Landis, NC. Memorial contributions may be directed to CVAN, Concord NC or to the North Carolina Special Olympics.
