Formerly of St. Joseph Mr. Surch passed away late Friday evening, October 19, 2007 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born July 20, 1926 in St. Joseph, one of two children to M. John and Marie Berndt Surch. Gene was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the end of World War II. He was employed by Michigan Bell Ameritech for 37 years, until his retirement in 1988. Mr. Surch was a member of St. Michael Lutheran Church in Portage and the Telephone Pioneers. He was an avid woodworker and enjoyed spending time with his horse, Mac. On March 5, 1955, Gene was united in marriage to Darlene Dvorak in St. Joseph, who survives. Also surviving are their three children, David Kim Surch of Laguna Niguel, CA, Randell Cindy Surch of Aliso Viejo, CA, and Sandy Surch of Howell; and two grandchildren, Preston and Pilar. Preceding him in death are his parents; and his sister, Joyce Laukus. Memorial services for Mr. Surch will be at 10:00 AM on Thursday at St. Michael Lutheran Church, 7211 Oakland Drive, with Rev. Dr. Paul R. Naumann officiating. Interment will be in North Shore Memory Gardens, Coloma. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Michael Lutheran Church ?
